An immersive training application that prepares future early childhood professionals for family-centred care through conversational AI. Using Unreal MetaHumans and Convai's interactive AI, students hold natural voice-based conversations with a virtual mother. The scenario focuses on a child acting out in school, and students practice uncovering underlying family stressors, learning to empathise, communicate, and support both caregiver and child. The platform fosters real-world conversation skills, making students ready to navigate sensitive family situations.

Challenge

Early childhood education students need practice having sensitive, empathetic conversations with caregivers about difficult family situations — but live role-play is hard to scale and feedback is inconsistent.

Solution

Built a desktop application using Unreal MetaHumans and Convai's conversational AI, where students hold open-ended voice conversations with a virtual mother whose child is acting out in school. The system supports natural dialogue, allowing students to practice uncovering underlying family stressors and demonstrating empathy.

Outcome

Supports Seneca's Early Childhood Education diploma program, which includes work on child development, communication, and working with families. Demonstrates an applied use of conversational AI for sensitive communication training.
