Early Childhood Education - Collaborative Care
ECE Collaborative Care

- Seneca Polytechnic

An immersive training application that prepares future early childhood professionals for family-centred care through conversational AI. Using Unreal MetaHumans and Convai's interactive AI, students hold natural voice-based conversations with a virtual mother. The scenario centres on a child acting out in school: students practice uncovering underlying family stressors, communicating with empathy, and supporting both caregiver and child. The skills carry directly into sensitive real-world conversations.
- Supports Seneca's Early Childhood Education diploma program, which includes work on child development, communication and working with families
- Demonstrates an applied use of conversational AI for sensitive communication training
Challenge
Early childhood education students need practice having sensitive, empathetic conversations with caregivers about difficult family situations, but live role-play is hard to scale and feedback is inconsistent.
Solution
Built a Windows desktop application using Unreal MetaHumans and Convai's conversational AI, where students hold open-ended voice conversations with a virtual mother whose child is acting out in school. The AI is embedded in a larger training system, not a standalone chatbot demo: scenario logic, interaction architecture and technical UX wrap the conversation so practice maps onto the curriculum.
Outcome
Supports Seneca's Early Childhood Education diploma program, which includes work on child development, communication, and working with families. Demonstrates an applied use of conversational AI for sensitive communication training.
