DM Combine Cathedral

- Personal Project

A custom multiplayer deathmatch map built in the Valve Source Engine, set in a Combine-occupied coastal church and graveyard. The environment tells a story through its architecture — an old cemetery perched on a shoreline cliff, a church and tower retrofitted as a regional Combine base of operations. The design is a symmetrical open square layout, engineered for natural flow between open and closed spaces with weapon and ammo placement balanced across common player paths. The atmosphere is dark, creepy, and deliberate.
Challenge
Design and ship a balanced Half-Life 2 Deathmatch map solo — symmetrical enough for fair competitive play, atmospheric enough to feel handcrafted — with weapon and ammo placement that supported natural flow between open and closed spaces.
Solution
Took the map from concept to ship as sole level designer: conceptual design, world building, architectural modelling, lighting, scripting, gameplay events, and performance optimisation. Designed the layout symmetrically for balanced competitive play and authored lighting to carry the dark, atmospheric tone.
Outcome
Shipped as a custom Half-Life 2 Deathmatch map demonstrating end-to-end solo production: layout, architecture, lighting, scripting, and optimisation.
